McCarran International Airport is the primary airport to Las Vegas and Clark County. The airport is at 8 km to the south from the main strip of Vegas and is at Paradise Road, Clark County. The name McCarran is being given to honor the former Senator of Nevada Pat McCarran. McCarran International Airport is a Clark County possession and is navigated by Clark County Department of Aviation. It serves as the largest operational base for Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Air.

McCarran ranked world’s 15th most passenger trafficking airport and 6th for aircraft movements in 2008. The airport has about 1234 slot machines, and has been estimated to operate with 625,000 aircrafts and 53 million passengers.

History Of McCarran Airport

George Crockett, an America aviator, set up Alamo Airport at the present site of McCarran Airport, in the year 1942. In 1948 Clark County government acquired the airport and put it for commercial use and on 20th December of the same year the airport was renamed as McCarran International Airport. The terminal was architected by John Replogle and Welton Becket & Associates and was motivated by John F. Kennedy and O’Hare Airports.

McCarran Airport was granted a fund of $300 million for expansion in 1978 under a project named McCarran 2000, under which a 9-level parking lot, a new terminal, runway extensions, a new tunnel, and other amenities to facilitate the passengers better. The entire procedure completed by the year 1987. Terminal 2 was built in during that period replacing the two different terminals which were used for American Airlines and Pacific Southwest Airlines.

During 1990s a Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) was installed to simplify the entire system and it still remains the only major airport of United States which is completely under common use system. In 1998, 28 gates were added to the D Gate and in 2005 the North Wing opened with 10 gates and 9 more gates in 2008, modifying the McCarran 2000 project.

In 2003 McCarran International Airport was endowed with Speed Check kiosks, allowing the passengers t collect their boarding passes from any counter. The same year McCarran airport installed radio-frequency identification bag tags and was amongst one of the first users of the technology. The airport started providing wireless internet service inside the premises for free since 2005.

The airport started facilitating with rental cars since 2007. The US Airways Club was shut down in 2008 due to cost cutting. Due to energy supply crisis in 2008 the US Airways night-flight hub had to be shut down. In 2001 the Delta Airlines’ Crown Room lounge was shut down. In 2010 the US Airways put down their crew base.

McCarran International Airport could be reached taking the Tropicana Avenue or Las Vegas Beltway via ground transport. Transports arrive at the airport through McCarran Airport Connector. The RTC Transit also plies buses to the airport route stopping at Terminal 1 outside level – 0.

Transports From McCarran Airport

Follow the yellow triangles to reach the pick up zone. Bus, shuttles, limos, and taxicabs are also available. The exit at the west side of the baggage counter via exits 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 will lead to the shuttle stand. Along with share shuttles hiring provision is also there.

Other Facilities

Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum on the Esplanade, above the baggage area on level 2 is a great source of entertainment and educational at the same time. The museum is open 24/7 round the year. A small prop of the museum is also at some other places including the D gates.
